On December 30, 1922, in the aftermath of revolution and civil war, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formally established.

The new state объединed — by design and ideology — Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, and the Transcaucasian Federation, marking the official end of the Russian Empire and the birth of the world’s first nation founded on Marxist socialism.
