The Birth of the “Flying Saucer” – June 24, 1947
On this day, Kenneth Arnold, a businessman and amateur pilot, spotted nine strange objects streaking across the sky while flying near Mount Rainier, Washington.

He described them as “moving like saucers skipping on water.” The press dubbed them “flying saucers”, and just like that, a new era in history (and pop culture) began.
