The IBM Personal Computer, model 5150, introduced on August 12, 1981, whose open architecture made it the template for the personal computing industry.

On August 12, 1981, IBM unveiled a beige box at a hotel in New York and quietly changed the course of computing. The IBM Personal Computer, officially the model 5150, was the mainframe giant's entry into a market it had long ignored. Priced at around fifteen hundred dollars, built around an Intel processor and running an operating system supplied by a small company called Microsoft, it looked unremarkable. Its consequences were anything but.

IBM had built its empire on room-sized machines sold to large institutions and had been slow to take the personal computer seriously. Smaller, nimbler companies like Apple were selling machines to individuals and hobbyists. To catch up quickly, a small IBM team in Boca Raton, Florida, working under the code name Project Chess, designed and built the PC in about a year, an astonishing pace for a company known for taking years to develop new products.

Compaq released the first true clone in 1983, and soon a flood of manufacturers, including Dell and many others, were producing IBM-compatible computers. The standard IBM had established spread far beyond IBM itself. The term PC came to mean any machine built on that architecture, and IBM's own share of the market it had created steadily shrank.

The lasting winners were the companies that controlled the pieces IBM had left open: Microsoft, whose operating system became the industry standard, and Intel, whose processors powered the machines. The IBM PC lent the personal computer the legitimacy of a corporate titan and set a standard that, decades later, still underlies the overwhelming majority of the world's computers. IBM built the template, and then watched the industry it launched grow far larger than itself.
