December 6, 1921 — The Irish Free State Is Born

After years of revolution and rising tensions, the Anglo-Irish Treaty is signed in London, bringing an end to the Irish War of Independence and establishing the Irish Free State as a self-governing dominion of the British Commonwealth.

The signing of the treaty split Ireland, not just territorially, but ideologically. While it was seen as a major step toward sovereignty, many Irish republicans, including Éamon de Valera, rejected the compromise, setting the stage for the Irish Civil War.
